Winter (60cm x 80cm, acrylic paint on canvas, year created: 2012)
I tried to do a landscape painting Me and my BF were taking photos at the seaside (south Finland) a few weeks ago. It was -16ēC and we were freezing. The view was spectacular though so I tried to do a painting of it (I took a photo and painted at home!!! Wasn't freezing outside with paints ). I haven't really ever done landscape paintings, but I admire artist who do paint landscapes (My favorit is probably Casper David Friedrich).
I submitted some photos and even two videos of our seaside expedition on my blog: [link]
I enjoy this work quite a bit. Not only did you successfully accomplish the basic concept of 'winter' and snow with this work, but the barren land and muted color scheme seem to personify an emotion. Most people seek to complete a winter painting with beautiful trees, hills and frozen bodies of water. This gritty take on the subject matter is something I find refreshing and very raw.
When I look at this painting I feel like I've been abandoned to a place where I need to work out some kind of internal conflict. It definitely speaks louder than a simple season, and your concept of winter has delved much deeper than that.
The stroke marks are much more detailed in the foreground with a more blended approach in the sky. This gives the work a sense of depth and a vagueness which adds to the emotive concept. I love the warm and cool tones together. Overall, very nice job.
Great to hear you lived in Finland! When I've been abroad somewhere people don't even always know where Finland is. I hope you liked your stay in Joensuu
A lot! i was studying forestry so it was perfect for me - i love nature. I couldn't understand people who were lamenting that it was such a boring place - boring=no clubs etc. to them. For me it was sort of paradise. Nature and solitude.
I'm glad to hear you appreciated Finland so much! I've lived abroad 15 years of my life. Living back in Finland is great for me! All countries have they advantages and disadvantages. Having no clubs etc. around is only meaningful a short period of time. People should enjoy the nature more
I don't get all this "there is no clubs in Finalnd" thing. I live in Warsaw where is a plenty of clubs and i haven't visited 99% of them... but I guess i'm different than most of people i'm not sure if I could spend rest of my life in Finland, but for sure I'd like to get back there for some time. Maybe one day and i love nature - I studied forestry
